What happens if I import a file with duplicate contacts?

A single unique email address can only be stored in one contact, so the system will only import the first contact it finds with a duplicate email address.

During the import process, you will be asked to select how duplicates will be handled. You must specify what the system should do if it identifies a record in your file with an email address that already exists. The choices are:

  • Append - Add any new fields to the contact's existing details. Existing fields will not be updated.
  • Leave - Leave the contact's existing details unchanged. The contact will still be added to any groups selected.
  • Update - Update the contact's existing details for mapped fields only. Unmapped fields will not be updated.
  • Replace - Replace all of the contact's existing details with the information being imported.

Any duplicate contacts will not be imported into the system and will be displayed on the Import Contacts result page as not being imported.
