How do I find contacts not currently stored in any group?

There are several ways to locate contacts that are not included in any group.

If you only wish to locate contacts not currently included in any group, follow these steps*:

  1. Export your contacts.
  2. Open or save the CSV/XLS file, and sort by the last column ("Groups").
  3. Those contacts not currently included in any group will have nothing entered in that column and will appear either at the very top or very bottom of your spreadsheet.

* Does not apply to accounts using Dynamic Groups. If your account includes Dynamic Groups, please proceed to the steps outlined below.

If you wish to locate contacts not currently included in any group and also have those contacts added to their own new group, follow these steps:

This will require a multi-step process. First you will need to add each of your contacts into a new group, and then you will be able to remove the contacts stored in any other groups from your new group - thus leaving you with a group of only those contacts that are not currently stored in any group.

Step 1: Add all contacts to a new group

  1. Click Contacts in the main navigation menu.
  2. Make sure the text in the Search bar says "With all contacts," and then go to the Perform menu, and select Add to groups.
  3. Click the Add Group text link at the bottom of the list of groups, and enter a name for the group (such as "Contacts No Group"). Then select your newly created group and click the Add to Groups button.

Step 2: Remove contacts from this group that are already stored in other groups

  1. Click the Groups tab, and click the box at the top of the page within the Search bar to select all groups on that page. If you have multiple pages of groups, you will need to click Next at the bottom of the page to proceed to additional pages and click the box to select all at the top of each page. Once complete, tick the box next to the new group you had created in Step 1 ("Contacts No Group" in this case) to deselect it.
  2. Go to the Perform menu, and select Remove Contacts from Other Groups. You will see the top of the window says that "The contacts in the groups already selected will be removed from the groups you select below."
  3. Tick the box next to the new group you had created in Step 1 ("Contacts No Group" in this case) to select it.
  4. Click the Remove Contacts button.

Step 3: The only contacts in the group created in Step 1 will be those contacts that are not stored in any other groups
